Grant Writer Job Description

Sanctuary Centers of Santa Barbara is seeking a part-time to full-time (20-40 hours per week) highly knowledgeable Grant Writer. This is an immediate opening for a grant writer with extensive experience in the Santa Barbara community working with local foundations. We are seeking an individual with a can-do attitude and superior writing skills. Candidates must have at least five years of documented successful grant writing and impeccable references in Santa Barbara. Primary responsibilities include researching grant-making organizations and analyzing them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs. Duties will include the preparation of letters of intent, grant proposals, public funding applications, and grant reports. Must be a self-starter with the ability to anticipate needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision. Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, and be able to build relationships with donors, staff and the Board of Directors.

Must be located in or willing to move to Santa Barbara.

Essential Duties

  • Develop/Maintain effective, long-term working relationships with grantors through stewardship activities to facilitate the grants process.
  • Compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
  • Review the budget of a project or program for which funding is sought and make recommendations to the client on how to better present it to grant-making organizations.
  • Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-making organization’s preferences and follow exactly each grant-making organization’s guidelines.
  • Keep in contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material.
  • Manage the process of supplying progress reports when required by a grant-making organization that has funded a project or program.
  • Responsible for administration and completion of all required post-award reporting, compliance and evaluation as needed.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • BA/BS degree required.
  • An accomplished writer, proficient at directing and managing a competitive grant application
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, manage several projects concurrently, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
