What is the Integrated Health Clinic?

The Integrated Health Clinic was established in 2017. Today, our team at Sanctuary Centers is partnering with Premier Valley Medical Group to provide patient-centered medical and behavioral health services for adults living with mental illness, including substance use disorders. Though our clinic & services are specifically designed to accommodate the needs of those with a mental illness–The Integrated Health Clinic is open to the entire community of Santa Barbara County. Individuals living with mental illness are twice as likely to suffer from preventable diseases including heart disease, emphysema, liver disease, and diabetes. They are statistically only half as likely to seek treatment.

Navigating challenges in the healthcare system, these individuals are often unable to find proper medical care that addresses the unique issues presented by mental illness. This can lead to problems with scheduling and attending appointments for preventive care and failure to follow up on treatment recommendations. Unfortunately, in many of these cases, individuals living with mental illness resort to seeking and receiving expensive emergency room services as their symptoms progress into chronic conditions. The Integrated Health Clinic seeks to provide a personalized, healthier path for adults living with mental illness in the community we love and call home.

“The care I received [from the Integrated Health Clinic] is the best medical care I have ever received. I came in because I was short of breath, and full of fear. People don’t go in because they are afraid and don’t want to find out bad news but that doesn’t work too well, so eventually you have to get care…I was treated with respect and there was a partnership in addressing my health and well-being. When it was determined that I needed a higher level of care, I was offered immediate and free transportation; Who does that?! Everything was set up for me and I didn’t have to wade through paperwork, I was just taken care of. It felt like family. Like I said, hands down the best medical care I have ever had.”

“The Integrated Health Clinic” program just makes sense. By bringing medical and dental services directly to adults with mental illness, healthcare professionals can quickly identify and treat risk factors before they develop chronic conditions, improving the patients quality of life while saving all of us precious financial resources in the long run. I fully support this program.”

—former Mayor Helene Schneider

“In my medical practice, I see so many mentally ill patients who have never received the proper medical care and as a result have developed chronic and debilitating health conditions. A clinic of this kind will provide the interventions desperately needed to extend lives and greatly improve the overall quality of life.”
