What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling and chronic psychological condition characterized by distressing, intrusive thoughts (obsessions), and/or repetitive, ritualistic behaviors (compulsions). Not all rituals or habits are compulsions. We all double check things sometimes. A person with OCD, however, is generally unable to control their obsessive/compulsive thoughts and behaviors even though they may recognize them as excessive.
Symptoms
OCD symptoms, whether obsessions or compulsions, can interfere with all aspects of life including work, school, and personal relationships.
Symptoms of obsessions may include:
- Fear of germs or other contaminations
- Unwanted, forbidden, or taboo thoughts involving sex, religion, and harm
- Aggressive thoughts towards others or self
- Having things symmetrical or in a perfect order
Common compulsions are:
- Excessive cleaning and/or handwashing
- Ordering and arranging things in a particular, precise way
- Repeatedly checking on things or worrying that they are not done (e.g. doors locked, oven is off, etc.)
- Compulsive counting
