What is Addiction/Substance Abuse?

Substance abuse is the medical term used to describe a pattern of using a substance, such as drugs, alcohol, or nicotine, that causes significant problems or distress in one’s life. Problems related to substance abuse may include neglecting responsibilities such as work, school, or childcare or using the substance in situations that may be unsafe such as while driving. These problems may result in legal problems that interfere with relationships.

Almost every individual we see with chemical dependency issues has an accompanying psychological component, which often contributes to, is affected by, or exacerbates their addiction. At Sanctuary Centers, we use the term “Co-Occurring Disorder” to refer to a simultaneous diagnoses of substance use with another mental illness such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc. A person with a co-occuring disorder often faces greater challenges than a person coping with either substance abuse or mental illness alone. Drug or alcohol use may set off an acute episode of mental illness, and may intensify its symptoms. Conversely, individuals trying to cope with symptoms of a mental illness may “self-medicate,” turning to drugs or alcohol to try to feel better.

What substances are most often abused?

Substances most commonly abused include:

  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana
  • Prescription medicines, such as pain pills or stimulants
  • Methamphetamine
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates
  • Hallucinogens
  • Inhalants

Symptoms

Here are some common symptoms of a substance use disorder, which may vary from person to person:

  • Withdrawal from family and friends
  • Sudden changes in behavior
  • Using substances under dangerous conditions and/or engaging in risky behaviors
  • Loss of control over use of substances
  • Developing a high tolerance and withdrawal symptoms
  • Consuming more of the substance or over longer periods of time than planned
  • Feeling like the substance is necessary to be able to function

Symptoms of addiction/substance abuse may resemble other medical problems or psychiatric conditions.

Sanctuary Centers Treats Co-Occurring Disorders

Sanctuary Centers provides comprehensive treatment programming to individuals diagnosed with a substance use disorder and a mental illness. Please Note: Sanctuary Centers is not a detox, drug rehabilitation facility, or a sober living home.

At Sanctuary Centers, we know that treatment of a co-occurring disorder requires addressing the issues of both the mental illness and the substance use disorder. That is why our Co-Occurring Disorders program focuses on treating addiction and substance use disorders by developing client treatment plans that also address mental health issues. Our services, which include both group and individual counseling, tackle both disorders head-on. With an eye toward relapse prevention, we help clients develop skills to manage cravings, triggers, and other symptoms unique to individuals diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. Beyond that, our program also encourages involvement in the community, as well as the building of a relationship with a Sponsor.

Our clients with a co-occurring disorder carry extra burdens and face additional challenges not seen with mental illness alone. With proper treatment, support, and commitment, we believe our clients can achieve and maintain a successful recovery.
